The Chronic Spoonful Mobile App & Responsive Website

Designed for people with chronic illnesses by people with chronic illnesses to help them manage their health.

CASE STUDY

Project Overview

The Chronic Spoonful is a podcast for spoonies by spoonies. The hosts discuss many of the issues facing people with chronic illnesses (a.k.a. Spoonies). While they have published a hard copy planner that helps chronically ill people track their medical and life journeys, they want to make the planner even more flexible and portable by creating an app that will do the same work as the paper journal. They also want to create a responsive website design that allows users to connect to the podcast, shop and get more information on chronic illness.

Challenge

Solution

Design a mobile app that allows Spoonies to track their symptoms, doctor visits, eating habits and more in one place. Then create a responsive website that keeps users informed of podcast and chronic illness updates.

Ideate

Since the area of chronic illness can be depressing, I continued with the brighter brand colors to lift the mood. The colors were inspired by the logos and ribbons for chronic illnesses (e.g. the color associated with Lupus is purple). I also chose an easy to read font, Montserrat. Plus, I used both icons and text for accessibility, as well as variations in headers and regular text.

Design System

Wireframes & Prototypes

Once the design elements were determined, I began creating wireframes and prototypes to ensure that both the app and the responsive website flowed properly. I began with low-fidelity wireframes and then moved to high fidelity mockups and prototypes--testing along the way.
